Handing Over of the Saratok Sports Complex

The
Saratok Sports Complex was handed over to the Saratok District Council
during a handing over ceremony that was held on 13 October 2006. The
ceremony was officially witnessed by Y.B. Datuk Peter Nyarok Ak.
Entrie, Sarawak Assistant Minister of Agriculture (Farmers’
Organisation and Co-operative).

To note, construction of the
sports complex began on 20 October 2004 and was completed on 31 March
2006. The total cost of the sports complex’s construction (in line with
the 8th Malaysia Plan’s approval) was RM 3.5 million. In terms of size,
the sports complex encompasses an area of 10 acres and is furbished
with the following facilities:

1. 8 Lane IAAF Synthetic Running Track
2. Football Field
3. Discus Hammer
4. Pole Vault
5. Shot Put

During
the implementation of this project, Saratok was a town with a
population of 18,233, giving way to the realisation that whilst the
population was continuing to grow, the town did not have any
standardised sports facilities.

The only places that could be
used for playing sports were the district council’s open field and town
hall. Thus, the district council felt that the construction of a sports
complex would enable the residents of Saratok to become involved in
sports on a community level, enabling them to recreationally
participate in activities that would improve their health and build
close ties and relationships with each other, in line with the
government’s plan to create a caring Malaysian society. With this in
view, it only seemed logical that a sports centre that was properly
equipped be built for the people as a means of encouraging sports and
fitness.

The main objective and function of the sports complex
is to develop the local community’s participation in sports-related
activities as well as creating a sense of civic mindedness amongst the
people of Saratok.

Hopefully, the existence of the Saratok
Sports Complex will serve as an impetus towards sports becoming an
important recreational activity in Saratok.
