Happy With Progress In The City
The out-going Kuching North Mayor, Tuan Haji Mohd. Atei Abang Medaan said that he was happy that DBKU has embarked on green technology in its plan for infrastructure development.
Speaking at a farewell parade accorded him at DBKU depot, he pointed out that in road construction for instance the city hall applied soil treatment and stabilization which helped reduce material cost and time consumption.
"Over and above that, this will also reduce maintenance costs later on", he said.
With prudent financial efforts DBKU managed to be one of the three state agencies awarded for star rating by the national audit panel.
Blessed with dedicated and effective staff and being mindful of the city folk's wishes, the city was able to progress toward the right direction.
"Applying inclusive approach we get the support and understanding of the ratepayers", he said.
He said, this was evident through marked increase in rate collection up to 90% and good recovery on outstanding ones.
"It is vital to practice inclusive approach whereby all parties in the city including peoples' representative and community leaders given some role in development planning," he said.
Kuching North will soon be a city of light when more tourists' spots, waterfront and esplanade will be lighted up.
He thanked the federal authority for providing more funds and subsidies for street lighting and this will contribute much to safe city program.
On the expiry of his term, he said he can leave office in peace & satisfaction having seen marked improvement in road system and flood mitigation especially in Petra Jaya area.
He attributed this to good networking between DBKU and state and federal ministries as well as relevant agencies which had attracted more resources and fund for more development in its area.
"The city hall also continued to excel) in sustainable and quality efforts as well as in sport and social development programs", he added.
He thanked agencies like FAMA for working closely with DBKU in providing modern facilities for small traders.
The fourty million Medan Niaga Satok will be completed by the end of the year.
The key to those successes was the mindful approach whereby the city hall tried hard to meet the expectation of the government and fund providers.
"All projects entrusted to DBKU accomplished and delivered promptly", he pointed out.
He also advised those recently emplaced on pensionable scheme to invest the refund of their EPF contribution especially for their children education.
"Even the amount used to be deducted monthly from their pay all along should go into saving, he added.
Tuan Haji Mohd. Atei said that he was obliged to fulfill the trust and opportunity given him to serve the city hall which he regarded as a honour in line with the state service motto.
"The achievement that the city hall had accomplished make me one of the happiest if not the happiest mayor around", he quipped.
Tuan Haji Mohd. Atei term will end this Sunday and the new mayor will swear in on Monday August 1 which falls on City Day.
