KUCHING: An idyllic scene in a longhouse ‘ruai’ was picked as the winning entry for the ‘My Beautiful Sarawak’ online photography competition, organised by local media management specialists Faradale Media-M Sdn Bhd.
The photo, entitled ‘A Glimpse of the Iban Longhouse’ was submitted by Lionel Garry Tawit, a manager in a Kuching-based travel and tour company, who said he took the shot during an outing with a group of tourists.
For his creative efforts, Lionel was presented with the first prize of a Digital SLR camera, during a simple prize-giving ceremony held at Faradale Media-M’s office here, yesterday.
Amadeus Donovan Sim claimed the first runner-up spot in the online photo competition with his entry entitled ‘Land of the Hornbills’, while Amirul Zaki Abdul Hamid emerged as the second runner-up with his photo entitled ‘Together We Unite’.
Each received a prize of a ‘point-and-shoot’ digital camera for their efforts.
The My Beautiful Sarawak online photography competition was held in conjunction with the inaugural ‘TweetUp Kuching’, which was organised by local blogging community, Sarawak Bloggers.
Meanwhile, a representative from Faradale Media-M explained that the idea for the competition came about from a desire to tap the creativity of Sarawak’s online community, particularly through photography and with a specific focus on promoting tourism in the State.
“Through competitions like ‘My Beautiful Sarawak’ we hope to encourage more of our young aspiring photographers out there to capture the wondrous beauty that we can find throughout our State,” said the representative in a press release issued yesterday.
Faradale Media-M is also planning to organise several events this year to showcase the creativity and innovativeness of Sarawakians, especially through the use of online and social media channels.
As for Sarawak Bloggers, according to its co-founder, Cyril Dason, the online photography contest was a great addition to the inaugural TweetUp Kuching event, held in Kuching last December.
“Sarawak Bloggers looks forward to more collaborative efforts with private sector organisations like Faradale Media-M and also with NGOs; to unite and bring us all closer together as a vibrant and harmonious online community,” said Cyril.
