MIRI: Short films produced by aspiring Steven Spielbergs of Sarawak for ‘Smiles of Unity’ short film competition have now been shortlisted to three, and it is up to the public to give their verdict at the public screening at Pustaka Miri tomorrow.
Organisers Yayasan Perpaduan Sarawak (YPS) said this would be the second leg of the completion after Sibu last Saturday before moving on to Kuching on September 1 for the final voting.
The screening will take place from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.
The three films are ‘Rojak’; a story of a teenager coping with family tragedy and bullying, ‘School Life’ – Form Six and mutual respect and ‘Si Kucing’; a six-year old boy harnessing the strength of the community to save a kitten.
The grand prize winner will take home RM11,000 in cash, while the first and second runners-up will receive RM7,000 and RM5,000 respectively.
From a pool of 16 entries, a panel of judges chose the three outstanding films that best depicted Sarawak’s unity and harmony.
Mark Bonchol, secretary to the YPS Board of Trustees, said the winner would be decided by the public and it was exciting to see many talented film-makers among young Sarawakians.
The competition began in December last year and closed recently on June 15.
It aims to provide an opportunity for budding local filmmakers aged between 18 and 35 years to use their talents to tell a story through a short film to highlight the unity in Sarawak.
Apart from the shortlisted films, two selected short cultural documentaries will be screened on the night.
‘Wayang’ will showcase the story of the iconic Indonesian puppet theatre, followed by ‘Chinese Knots’ which is a symbol of peace, success and prosperity to the Chinese community.
Both films were contributed by the Indonesian and Chinese embassies to highlight the diverse cultures and traditions in their countries.
It is also one of the events held as a run-up to YPS’ International Youth Cultural Conference (IYCC) in November this year that has generated quite a buzz among local college and university students.
The ‘March on for Unity 2012’ events by YPS are co-organised with Sarawak Development Institute (SDI) and Faradale Media-M Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Angkatan Zaman Mansang Sarawak (AZAM).
