The project involves upgrading the current two-lane two-way highway to a four-lane two-way highway, which involves constructing four bridges as well as replacing an old bridge. An upgrading of five main intersections; providing five U-turns at intersections, one roundabout, one right turn lane and 10 bus lay-by locations. The project also encompasses relocation of utilities and land acquisition; and installation of road lighting and furniture.
The total cost of the project is RM80 million in construction and is expected to complete within 21 months from 10 November 2015 to 9 August 2017.
The finished product is expected to ease the current traffic congestion occurring at the 10th Mile to 15th Mile stretch, which is considered to be the “bottleneck” between Serian and Kuching and the missing link of the Pan-Borneo Highway.
Additionally, it will improve road safety and minimise the risk of accidents, as well as stimulate economic activity along the highway.
