Sarawak Energy Berhad’s subsidiary SEB Power signed with China Gezhouba Group Company Limited and local company Untang Jaya Sdb Bhd Joint Venture for the contract of the main civil works of the Baleh Hydroelectric Plan on August 2nd.
In his welcoming speech, Sarawak Energy’s chairman Datuk Amar Abdul Hamed Sepawi said that the Baleh HEP project is another significant infrastructure project undertaken by SEB after the completion of the Murum HEP.
“Sarawak Energy’s project implementation model, commonly known as SEB Project Model-ensures every phase of the development is controlled by a decision gate that must be approved by the Board members of Sarawak Energy before proceeding to the next stage,” said Datuk Amar Abdul Hamed Sepawi.
As a platinum member and sustainability partner of International Hydropower Association (IHA), he added that the construction of the Baleh HEP is guided by the IHA Hydropower Sustainability Assessments Protocol and ICOLD-International Commission on Large Dams.
With the signing of the contract, it includes the design and construction of the main dam, intake structures, spillway and penstocks.
The design work for Baleh HEP is expected to commence in August this year while the construction of the dam is scheduled to begin in October next year.
Located at Baleh River about 95 km upstream from the confluence with the Rejang River in Kapit, the Baleh HEP will generate an additional 1, 285 MW of renewable energy to the grid upon completion and is expected to be fully commissioned in 2025.
