After its last games in 1990, Sukan Sarawak (SukSar) returns with the hopes of uncovering and nurturing new talents who can represent Sarawak at national and international levels in the sporting arena.
In his speech read by Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports YB Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah during the opening ceremony on 14 December 2017, Chief Minister YAB Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg added that the revival of the multi-sporting event was also a progressive step towards regaining Sarawak’s glory as a sports powerhouse as they were also preparing for the upcoming SUKMA 2018 in Perak.
SukSar 2017 is taking place from 14 to 17 December 2017, where 882 athletes from four contingents are competing in 18 sporting events.
These contingents are the Northern Zone with 236 athletes from Bintulu, Miri and Limbang; Central Zone with 220 athletes from Sibu, Kapit and Mukah; Western Zone with 181 athletes from Sri Aman, Betong and Sarikei; and host Southern Zone with 245 athletes from Kuching, Samarahan and Serian.
The sporting events are divided into two categories: 14 events for able athletes and four for the disabled. They are athletics, swimming, karate, weightlifting, badminton, cycling, handball, lawn ball, judo, archery, muay, petanque, rugby 7s, sepak takraw, archery (para), athletics (para), swimming (para) and powerlifting.
