Technical and vocational education and training (TVET) will be a game changer in driving Malaysia’s vision of becoming a high income, advanced nation through its human capital.
Minister of Human Resource Malaysia YB Dato’ Sri (Dr) Richard Riot Jaem stated this during the groundbreaking ceremony of the upcoming Serian Industrial Training Institute (ILP Serian) in Serian on Saturday, 24th March 2018, adding that TVET should no longer be perceived as a second option for education and careers among youths.
With the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution or Industry 4.0, children and youths of today, especially those from Sarawak, are greatly encouraged to pursue their studies at TVET institutions to keep pace with global advancement.
“The Economic Planning Unit has stated that by 2027, 65 percent of jobs require technical and vocational skills, as these jobs will become automated or digitalised,” he said.
Meanwhile, ILP Serian will be the 33rd industrial training institute in Malaysia and the fourth in Sarawak under the Manpower Department (JTM) Malaysia, following ILPs in Kota Samarahan and Miri and Advanced Technology Training Centre (ADTEC) Bintulu.
Construction of the institute, which costs RM260 million, will commence on a 57.76-acre land in Serian in May 2018 and is expected to be completed by February 2021.
When it goes into operation in 2021, courses such as welding, automotive, refrigeration and air conditioning, and mechanical computer aided drafting and design (CADD) technology (oil and gas) will be offered at the campus.
