IDECS 2018 to be held in May

Sarawak is set to host the second edition of International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak (IDECS 2018) from May 14 to 15 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK).

Themed ‘Data to Fuel Economic Growth and Quality of Life’, IDECS 2018 has identified four sub-themes namely data intelligence, start-ups, smart communities and digital government, hence covering a broad Data economy ecosystem.

“Research estimates that globally we generate about 16.3 zettabytes of data annually and by the 2025, that number will increase ten-fold at 163 zettabytes,”

“Therefore if becomes necessary for all of us in Sarawak- as we become an even more tech-savvy society in the future,-to truly understand how data is to be managed, how data can be a commercial assets for technopreneurs and even to be aware of the digital footprints we leave online,” said Sarawak State Secretary during a press conference at Wisma Bapa on April 18th.

With the objective to discuss and embark on new initiatives and actions plans of the Sarawak Digital Economy Strategy (2018-2022), he added that among the topics that will be covered during the conference includes cyber-security, Internet of Things (IoT), Digital Banking, Smart Cities and Artificial Intelligence.

“We must now ramp-up our action plans and over the past recent months in 2018 the Right Honourable Chief Minister has announced the works to be done and plans to be carried out by respective agencies and private sectors,” said YB Tan Sri Datuk Amar Haji Mohamad Morshidi bin Abdul Ghani adding that they hope to see more public-private partnerships within the five years strategic plan for a digitalised and developed nation.

With 26 exhibitors invited to the conference, IDECS 2018 will also showcase local talents through the IDECS Hackathon where the youth community can participate in a design sprint-like event to create new innovations using software application.

IDECS 2018 is expecting a total of 2400 participants. Those interested in participating can now register for the conference on www.idecs.sarawak.gov.my.
