The end of the first International Songket and Keringkam Exposition & Exhibition 2018 saw the launching of the “Songket & Keringkam: Warisan Melayu Sarawak” coffee book.
It was launched by the Sarawak Chief Minister during the Songket and Keringkam Pesona International Night 2018 on 31st October 2018 at Kuching.
The coffee book features the uniqueness of the beautiful handwoven Sarawak songket and keringkam embroidery in an in-depth study, which includes the history, application, motifs, philosophy and product innovations.
Written by Suhana Sarkawi, Dr Dayang Hanani Abang Ibrahim and Dr Nadianatra Musa, the book is divided into few chapters named after the Sarawak Malay textile motifs.
It is published under UNIMAS Publisher and copyrighted by the Sarawak State Government.
Chairman of Sarawak Heritage Innovation Project: Songket and Keringkam, YBhg Datu Dr Sabariah Putit said that the innovation project is to keep the traditional of songket and keringkam so that it can be preserved, enjoyed and appreciated by the future generations through Program Latihan Teknikal Tenunan Songket & Sulaman Keringam at CENTEX, Kuching.
“Efforts to develop this industry also includes effective marketing, commercialization, research, publication and management of patterns and intellectual property rights,” said YBhg Datu Dr Sabariah who is also the Deputy State Secretary in her speech.
The Sarawak Heritage Innovation Project: Songket and Keringkam is a collaboration between Old Kuching Kampung Heritage, UNIMAS, Tun Abdul Razak Campus Teacher Education Institute, Samarahan, CENTEXS, and the Sarawak’s songket community as of June 2017.
