The state government is reconsidering on looking back into the Light Rail Transit (LRT) project as one of the public transports in Sarawak.
Chief Minister YAB Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg said that LRT is one of the best options to tackle environmental problems such as congestion.
“LRT is one of the best options, particularly in heavily congested areas such as Kota Samarahan and Kuching,”
This was said by YAB Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg during the 8th Sarawak Chief Minister’s Environmental Award (CMEA) 2017/2018 on 12th December 2018.
“Our cities are currently dubbed as clean and healthy cities but that may not be for long as we are growing with an exponential rate,”
“We are already challenge with traffic jams, waste generation, and rapid growth of urban population. Therefore, there is a need for us to address these challenges before they become major problem for us,” he added.
Transportation remains one of the major contributions to air pollution in urban areas and cities.
In overcoming the degradation of air quality, among the other options that Sarawak is exploring to mitigate air pollution includes hydrogen fuel bus, electric motor vehicles and biofuels vehicles.
