The refuelling station at the integrated facility
An integrated hydrogen production plant and refuelling station has been operational under Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) in Kuching since 2019.
The first of its kind in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, the facility is established to enable SEB to conduct research and development on hydrogen energy and its application, particularly as an alternative renewable energy for economic areas such as transportation and export.
The production plant is able to produce 130kg of hydrogen a day at a purity of 99.999 percent (five 9s) through an electro-chemical process called electrolysis.
When this amount is stored at the refuelling station – which only caters for hydrogen-powered vehicles – it can support and fully refuel up to five fuel cell buses and ten fuel cell cars in one day.
With this integrated facility in place, Sarawak could become a significant global player in the contribution to knowledge on hydrogen technology and its application particularly in a tropical environment.
