The empowerment and self-sufficiency of women along with their social and economic status is crucial for the achievement of sustainable development in Sarawak.
To empower women, numerous efforts has been done by the Ministry of Welfare and Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development.
Among them is the establishment of the Wisma Wanita Training Centre (WWTC) by the ministry through the Women and Family Department Sarawak (JWKS).
Established since 2014, WWTC has offered three courses namely Creative Sewing, Beauty and Spa, as well as Cooking. So far, WWTC has trained about 13,412 participants.
Apart from that, in 2019, the State government has double the allocation for the entrepreneur training grant under the JWKS from RM1 million to RM2 million. The grant is meant to empower women in economy.
Other programmes and initiatives by the ministry include the Women Skills Training Outreach Programme (WST); financial management course, Sarawak Women Aspiration Group (SWAG): Starting Your Business Essentials Training program in collaboration with Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak; Women Leadership Training Program (WLTP) and Program Women of Wonders (WOW): Empowering Sarawak Women NGO.
