Must read

With economic sectors resuming activities following the easing of lockdowns around the world, more vehicles are expected to return to the roads within cities and across districts, states and countries.

This re-emergence of commuting, along with other human activities required to generate income for the economy, will lead to a rise in air pollution levels, subsequently worsening air quality and increasing global temperatures.

While businesses and governments are urged to implement environmentally-friendly measures in developing the economy post COVID-19, citizens can play their part to help reduce the negative environmental and health impact caused by air pollution.

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, here are some actions citizens can take to reduce air pollution:

  • Carpool, use public transportation, bike, or walk whenever possible
  • Combine errands and reduce trips. Walk to errands when possible
  • Reduce the number of trips taken in a vehicle
  • Avoid excessive idling of vehicle
  • Keep vehicles and other engines properly tuned
  • Ensure tyres are properly inflated
  • Use environmentally safe paints and cleaning products whenever possible
  • Mulch or compost leaves and yard waste
  • Avoid burning leaves, trash, and other materials
  • Conserve energy – at home, at work, everywhere.
