Environmental sustainability will be a key principle for Sarawak’s socio-economic development as it aspires to become an advanced state by 2030
To ensure Sarawak’s physical and socio-economic longevity, environmental sustainability will be fundamental in developing the State economy, according to Chief Minister YAB Datuk Patinggi Dr Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg.
“We will continue our reforestation efforts to increase forest cover. We will also enhance our regulatory framework and make sure they are complied with. For example, our agricultural and mining activities will be monitored and certified.
“Finally, we will invest in technology and innovation that can ensure all our economic activities are sustainable. We want to be recognised by the World for sustainability and protection of our biodiversity,”
said the Chief Minister in opening the first Sarawak Economic Action Council (SEAC) meeting in Kuching on 25 June 2020.
Environmental Sustainability is one of the three pillars that anchors Sarawak’s vision of becoming an advanced state by 2030; the others are Economic Prosperity and Inclusive Society.
“By 2030, Sarawak will be a thriving society driven by data and innovation where everyone enjoys economic prosperity, social inclusivity and a sustainable environment,” the Chief Minister described the vision.
The SEAC is established to form a cohesive robust strategy based on 14 economic sectors and enablers as a guidepost for Sarawak to achieve its aspiration by 2030, taking into account the impact of COVID-19 to its socio-economic development.
These sectors and enablers are commercial agriculture; manufacturing; agro commodities; mining; services; forestry; renewable energy; tourism; basic infrastructure; digital transformation; education and human capital development; transport; innovation; and utilities.
To guarantee the success of this strategy, the Chief Minister outlined five key levers that would help Sarawak accomplish its vision: regulatory framework and policies; inter-agency alignment; data and innovation; infrastructure and connectivity; and skill and entrepreneurship.
