How to Cope in Hot Weather

Must read

art-353-01Drinking water regularly keeps you hydrated during extreme hot weather

Being in a country with an equatorial climate, we are no stranger to the heat and humidity all year round. We even endure weeks or months of sometimes extreme hot weather during the day.

This kind of weather, however, can be dangerous, especially when we are exposed to it for a long period of time. In fact, we are more susceptible to dehydration and overheating under extreme heat, which can lead to heat cramps, heat exhaustion or even heatstrokes.

Furthermore, the hot weather can affect vulnerable people, including older people, young children and those with pre-existing medical conditions.

For that reason, we need to take care of our health and well-being while living in extreme hot weather. Here are ways to survive the heat:

  • Drink water, even if you do not feel thirsty. Take a bottle with you always.
  • Hot cars kill. Never leave kids, older people or pets in cars. The temperature inside a parked car can double within minutes.
  • Keep cool. Seek out air-conditioned buildings, draw your blinds, use a fan, take cool showers and dress in light and loose clothing made from natural fabrics.
  • Plan ahead. Schedule activities in the coolest part of the day and avoid exercising in the heat. If you must go out, wear a hat and sunscreen and take a bottle of water with you.
  • Check in on others. Look after those most at risk in the heat – your neighbour living alone, the elderly, the young, people with a medical condition and even your pets.
