These days, it is not common to see more people opting to wear fabric mask with colourful patterns and designs.
Unlike surgical mask which must be thrown away after use and replaced daily, a fabric face masks need to be washed with warm water after every use.
For those who decided to make their own fabric face mask, the World Health Organization (WHO) released a video recommending the suitable material and composition.
A fabric mask should have at least three layers; an outer layer, an inner layer and middle layer.
The inner layer can be an insert or another fabric layer.
The inner layer which comes in contact with your face should be of hydrophilic material such as cotton. This material can easily absorb droplets from your exhaled breath.
For hydrophilic material, it is important to select a lighter colour such as white which can help determine when it is soiled or wet.
The middle layer which act as a filter should go into a pocket between the inner layer and the outer layer.
Ideally, the material used for the middle layer should be of polypropylene fabric, typically referred as ‘non-woven’ is a flexible resin polymer.
The outermost layer is typically made out of hydrophobic material, where it will repel droplets and moisture from the external environment.
It can either be made from synthetic material such as polyester or a polyester and cotton blend.
