To get accustomed with the new normal brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, we must have the ability to adapt.

A highly valuable and sought after soft skill, adaptability is about having the capability to alter actions, direction or approach to performing a task by way of adjusting to different conditions or creating change within one’s surroundings.

Adaptability is especially crucial in overcoming uncertainties in order to move forward, which sometimes requires making hard decisions.

The more we are receptive to change, the more we become adaptable, in that we continuously build resilience towards future challenges by making ourselves more open to new experiences, thus improving our personal well-being.

So what makes some people adaptable? For one, they usually practise lifelong learning by being curious and having the interest in understanding how and why certain things function.

Their curiosity also encourages them to test new ideas and methods, and allows them to keep an open mind as they listen to different perspectives to gain more context.

Furthermore, adaptable people are strong-willed individuals, which means they perceive their failures as learning and growth opportunities, and they are more than willing to try various solutions in dealing with problems and challenges.

Most importantly, adaptable people are highly aware of their own values and priorities, believing that being stagnant will not enable them thrive in today’s rapidly changing environment and that change is inevitable.

They are therefore undaunted by the notion of adapting to their surroundings and the times.
