The Decade of Healthy Living prioritises concerted, sustained action to ultimately ensure that the older population of today and the future can lead longer, healthier lives
In August 2020, the 73rd World Health Assembly adopted a 10-year action plan to tackle the challenges of population ageing around the world.
The Decade of Healthy Ageing (2020-2030) provides an opportunity to foster collaboration between governments, civil society, international agencies, professionals, academia, the media and the private sector to enhance the lives of older people, their families and the communities that they live in through ten years of concerted, catalytic and sustained action.
It is the second action plan under the World Health Organisation (WHO) Global Strategy on Ageing and Health, which is built on the United Nations (UN) Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing and aligned with goals of the 2030 UN Sustainable Development Agenda.
The Decade intends to address four strongly interconnected areas for action, namely:
- Changing mindset, perception and behaviour towards age and ageing;
- Ensuring that communities foster the abilities of older people;
- Delivering person-centred integrated care and primary health services responsive to older people; and
- Providing access to long-term care for older people who need it.
For these areas to be addressed effectively, a platform will be established to connect and convene stakeholders that are promoting them at country level, as well as those searching for information, guidance and capacity-building.
It will also be based on strong collaboration with relevant multi-sectoral and multi-stakeholder partnering and other coordination mechanisms within and outside WHO and UN systems.
The platform enables efforts in the areas of action by:
- Giving attention to diverse voices and allowing meaningful engagement of older people, family members, caregivers, young people and communities;
- Fostering leadership and building capacity to take appropriate action integrated across sectors;
- Linking various stakeholders globally to share and learn from the experience of others; and
- Strengthening data, research and innovation to further drive implementation.
