As part of its tourism masterplan, the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) will develop the Damai peninsular into a resort city.
This is an effort to turn the area into a major tourist attraction.
This was said by SEDC Chairman, Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Husain in a press conference during a walkabout at the Sarawak Cultural Village on 27th November 2020.
The Damai resort city project will include new resorts, theme parks, cable cars, jungle trails and trekking facilities, wellness and health enclaves, marina and commercial and residential properties costing about RM4 billion.
These are in line with SEDC’s strategic plan of transforming the popular seaside area into a bustling tourism destination under the proposed Damai Resort City project.
Apart from the Damai resort city, SEDC was expected to invest substantially on the renovation of the Damai Lagoon Resort which would cost around RM100 million.
Damai Lagoon Resort would be renovated and expanded in two stages
Tan Sri Abdul Aziz said that Sarawak Chief Minister had announced in November last year that SEDC would take the lead in the development of tourism products, including construction of new hotels and upgrading existing ones.
He added that this is in line with the State government’s efforts to collaborate with the private sector on tourism development, which is one of the four priorities under the 12th Malaysia Plan.
Since last year, SEDC has embarked on several improvement works which included the refurbishment and upgrading works for 239 rooms and corridors, third floor function rooms, and other renovations to the Puteri Wing of Riverside Majestic Hotel in Kuching.
Aside from that, SEDC also did renovation work to the Grand Margherita Hotel and Sarawak Plaza Shopping Complex, the Sunset Ballroom foyer at Damai Beach Resort, and also to the Damai Lagoon Resort and Spa.
