The formation was territorial split within the firmer administrative division of JKR Sri Aman.
Betong Division is among the latest division to be established in Sarawak on 26 March 2002. It is located in the Saribas area and was previously part of the Sri Aman division.
Betong division is divided into three broad topographical regions; the coastal or riverine region, the midland region and the inland or hilly interior region. Currently, there are four districts under Betong Division, namely Betong district, Pusa district, Saratok district and Kabong district.
JKR Saratok is its administrative district, headed by the District Engineer.
The number of staffs in JKR Betong is 120 people and since its establishment, JKR Betong Division has four Divisional Engineer.

JKR Betong core function is to carry out operation as well as maintenance of assets and the implementation of projects costing less than RM2 million.
Their functions are as below;
- Management of the operation and supervising the execution/implementation of the routine and periodic maintenance programs to maintain and rehabilitate the assets to the required levels of service and as intended in their respective design lifespan
- Administrative of the contract for works carried by contractors, consultants and service providers
- Implementation of Minor Rural Projects (MRP) and other similar programmes
- Custodians and data management for Digital Development Plan (DDP) which includes assets management and project proposals
There are seven sections and one district JKR office under JKR Betong division, namely Minor Rural Projects (MRP), Road and Civil Engineering Assets (RCEA), Building Assets (B.A), Contract Fleet, Account and JKR Saratok.
