The Challenge of Monitoring Sarawak’s Second Largest Division

Must read

RAKAN Sarawak recently visited Miri Resident Office in Miri City to find out the latest physical and social development in Miri Division.

The resident office occupies three floors of Kompleks Islam Sarawak, Miri in Jalan Pujut (Levels 7, 8 and 9). It was previously located next to the old Miri City Council building; most departments within the council have since moved to its new building at Marina Parkcity
A map of Miri Division (ca. 2018) can be found in the lobby of the deputy resident’s office on Level 7. At an area size of 26,777 km2, the division is the second largest in Sarawak after Kapit Division, which is 38,934 km2
The RAKAN Sarawak team interviewing officers from Miri Resident Office. According to Acting Deputy Resident Rose anak Edward Tarang, the resident office alone has 56 staff members. Including those from district and sub-district offices, there are 194 people serving Miri Division in various capacities
The small number of staff poses a great challenge in monitoring and tackling urban and rural development in Sarawak, states Acting Deputy Resident Rose anak Edward Tarang. Nevertheless, she believes that Miri Resident Office is committed to supporting aspirations of the Sarawak Government, which is also in line with its vision and mission, as seen here in the lobby of the deputy resident’s office
