The Sarawak government is committed to ensuring that Sarawakian get good and fair educational opportunities by providing various necessary facilities and assistance.
Therefore, it is important that the infrastructure and approach to teaching and learning in this state is constantly improved.
On 2 October 2023, history was made when SK Maludam was officiated by the Premier of Sarawak, YAB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg.
SK Maludam was built in 2019 at a cost of approximately RM34 million and it was fully funded by the Sarawak Government.
This school can accommodate more than 400 students and is also equipped with a dormitory and various other infrastructure.
Besides SK Maludam, other schools that are fully funded by the Sarawak Government are SK Ulu Segan Bintulu, SK Merpati Jepang and SK Pulo in Kuching, SK Penasu Daro, SK Sageng and SMK Gedong in Simunjan.
“Today (2 October 2023), we are handing over this building to the Ministry of Education. Actually, the one that should hand it over is the federal government, but today, it’s the reverse. Although reversed, we are willing to do this because this is for the future of our children,” said Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari.
“That’s why I asked Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to grant us autonomy in education, especially for the implementation of projects because we know how to do it,” Premier explain further.
YAB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari further stated that the Sarawak Government will build laboratories in all 45 districts throughout the state which will be shared by each school in each district to strengthen Science, Technology, Engineering education and Mathematics (STEM) among students.
According to Premier, having such a laboratory will make it easier for students to understand STEM education.
For Sarawak, STEM education is key in producing a future workforce that highly skilled, creative, and innovative in both technical and non-technical fields. STEM will able driving the State digital economy and ensuring continuous development and progress.
A clear mark is setting up its own Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD). This is one of Premier Sarawak, YAB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg’s initial moves to spearhead the digital economy agenda.
