Rethinking Rural Development

Must read

Developing rural areas has always been on the government’s agenda.

Rural development is considered to be of noticeable importance in the country today than in the olden days in the process of the evolution of the nation.

The rural economy holds significant potential for creating decent and productive jobs, eradicating poverty, ensuring food security, and achieving social justice whereby it has always been considered as important in the agenda of national development.

Therefore, it is important for the government to be productive and provide enough facilities to upgrade their standard of living.

Rural development is about a process that seeks social change and sustainable economic development for the rural community´s ongoing progress.

It is a strategy that tries to obtain an improved and productivity, higher socio-economic equality and ambition, and stability in social and economic development.

Sustainable rural development is vital to the economic, social and environmental viability of nations.

Rural economic development is a part of community development.

Community development is a process where people are together with the government and other stakeholders to improve the socio-economic and cultural conditions of the community.

The economic development of rural communities involves participation of related community development through effective participation of rural communities in the management of their own social, economic and environmental objectives by empowering people in rural areas, particularly women and youth, including through organizations such as local cooperatives and by applying the bottom-up approach.

In planning rural development, the parties concerned must first identify the areas they want to develop, in addition to considering and getting the input of local people to help perfect the development policy or programme.

Investments in environmental protection, rural infrastructure and in rural health and education are critical to sustainable rural development and can enhance national well-being.

It’s time to adapt new approaches to rural economic development, drawing on broader learning about the sources of competitiveness in the global economy.

In this respect, a new model of rural development programme that is more comprehensive and inclusive is vital to enhance the innovation and modernisation of the rural economy.

Rural economic development should address and harness the efficient spatial distribution of economic activity rather than attempt to replicate urban economies.

Rural economic development should focus on the unique strengths of each area, rather than concentrating on making improvement to generic weaknesses.

The appropriate economic unit for strategy purposes must include not only rural areas but also adjacent urban canters.

Each community should bear responsibility for its economic success.

Rethinking rural development policy will also require investing in these communities from the bottom up instead of the top down, empowering them to identify and leverage their existing assets and knowledge and to promote homegrown economic opportunities.
