The latest updates reveal a substantial reduction in delayed projects and a comprehensive commitment to elevating the standards of living for Sarawak’s citizens.
Under Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah’s astute guidance, MIPD has achieved a remarkable feat, slashing the number of delayed projects from 96 in early 2022 to 2 in 2024. Addressing the success, Datuk Amar Douglas attributed it to the harmonious collaboration and concerted efforts of all agencies under MIPD, emphasising the spirit of teamwork and understanding.
“In 2022, when I assumed the position of MIPD minister, my directive was clear –- to ensure the effective and timely delivery of all development projects to the people,” shared Datuk Amar Douglas at the closing of the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak 2024 High-Performance Team (HPT) Retreat Program on January 27, 2024. He acknowledged the challenges faced in the post-COVID-19 era, and the ministry celebrated the significant reduction in project delays within two years.
Performance indicators for development expenditure paint a picture of MIPD’s unwavering commitment. Starting at 67.46% in 2021, escalating to 68.16% in 2022, and reaching an impressive 89% in 2023, MIPD has outperformed other ministries and departments. The earmarked development expenditure budget 2024 stands at RM799.5 million, and Datuk Amar Douglas expresses unwavering confidence in surpassing past achievements.
A cornerstone of Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah’s approach is a conscientious allocation of funds to crucial infrastructures such as roads, bridges, schools, and hospitals, especially in rural areas. “Every allocation directed towards our agencies must be channelled towards the welfare of our people. They rely on us to deliver quality infrastructure, and it is our duty to ensure these funds are effectively utilised,” emphasised the Deputy Premier.
Setting ambitious targets, MIPD aims for a flawless 100% development spending performance in 2024 and a commitment to achieving zero delayed projects. The Public Works Department (JKR) takes on an ambitious target of 100% road connectivity in Sarawak by 2030, intending to connect 1,086.36 kilometres of roads involving 451 settlements with a population of 64,465.
In addressing the pressing issue of dilapidated schools, JKR Sarawak proposes the establishment of a committee to address completed and re-tendered projects. Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas is committed to implementing projects according to schedule or earlier, aligning with the “Segulai Sejalai” spirit and emphasising set standards and specifications.
Commending JKR Sarawak for organising the three-day HPT retreat from January 25 to 27, Datuk Amar Douglas expressed his satisfaction with the insightful discussions. The retreat involved 192 officers and aimed to formulate a strategic plan and direction for JKR Sarawak, focusing on addressing weaknesses to deliver more effective services to the people.
