In a monumental stride towards sustainable development, Bintulu Port, Sarawak’s flagship container port, is on the cusp of transforming into a global leader in green energy. Premier Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg envisions Sarawak as an economic powerhouse and front-runner in Malaysia’s green and clean energy production. State Secretary, YB Datuk Amar Haji Mohamad Abu Bakar bin Marzuki recently provided a comprehensive update on the latest developments surrounding Bintulu Port, shedding light on its pivotal role in achieving these ambitious goals during the Bintulu Port Media Appreciation Night 2024 last night.
Optimism Surrounds Bintulu Port Takeover:
State Secretary, YB Datuk Amar Haji Mohamad Abu Bakar bin Marzuki expressed confidence in finalising the takeover of Bintulu Port from the Central Government by June. The process, currently at 70%, is poised for parliamentary approval. Despite specific pending details, Sarawak is well-prepared for the transition, aligning seamlessly with Premier Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari’s vision for the state.
In his recent message during the Chinese New Year celebrations, the Premier Sarawak emphasised three crucial elements for Sarawak’s progression in 2024: the takeover of Bintulu Port, establishing its own airline, and a significant stake in trading banks. These pillars underscore the government’s steadfast commitment to driving economic growth and sustainability, showcasing a holistic approach towards a resilient and self-reliant Sarawak.
Bintulu Port’s Economic Significance in Sarawak’s Green Economy and Sustainable Energy Focus:
As the Chairman of Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad (BPHB) and Board Member of Bintulu Port Sdn. Bhd, Datuk Amar Haji Mohamad Abu Bakar bin Marzuki unveiled critical updates during the Bintulu Port Media Appreciation Night 2024. Beyond being a liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminal, Bintulu Port is pivotal in palm oil exports, contributing 95% to Sarawak’s economy at about four million tons a year. It is the largest container terminal in East Malaysia, surpassing the combined volume of all eight ports in Sabah and placing third in Malaysia, which amounts to roughly fifty million tons annually.
Ruslan, CEO of BPHB, underscored the port’s commitment to realising Premier Sarawak’s vision. Bintulu Port aims to become a ‘Major Green Power Port,’ playing an instrumental role in providing green and clean energy for the future. The strategic location and robust infrastructure position the port as a key player in achieving Sarawak’s ambitious green energy goals. This aspiration aligns seamlessly with Sarawak’s commitment to environmental sustainability, addressing the global call for reduced carbon footprints.
Ruslan also emphasised Bintulu Port’s economic significance. Combined with Samalaju Port, they can handle products worth almost half a trillion ringgit annually. The port’s role in exporting LNG and palm oil products and its capability to efficiently serve offshore Sarawak solidify its position as a significant economic driver. Notably, Bintulu Port Holdings holds the sole license to operate a full-fledged oil and gas supply base for Sarawak, as awarded by the Ministry of Finance (MOF) and the Malaysian Customs Department in September 2023, enhancing its role in the region’s economic landscape.
