One of his earliest and most significant initiatives was the establishment of Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS), a state-owned entity managing Sarawak’s oil and gas resources.

This move marked Sarawak’s quest for greater autonomy in the energy sector, aligning with the state’s goal of economic self-reliance.

Digital Economy Strategy: Laying the Foundation

In 2018, Premier YAB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari unveiled the Sarawak Digital Economy Strategy 2018–2022, a roadmap to transform the economy through digital innovation.

It emphasized sectors like agriculture, manufacturing, tourism, and smart cities.

In 2019, Sarawak launched Southeast Asia’s first integrated hydrogen production plant and refueling station in Kuching.

This strategy integrates advanced technology and human capital development to rejuvenate Sarawak’s economy, focusing on sectors like healthcare, renewable energy, and modern agriculture.

Reclaiming Sarawak’s Rights

A significant milestone was the successful reclamation of Sarawak’s rights over its oil and gas resources in 2021.

Leveraging the Oil Mining Ordinance of 1958 and the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), the state regained control over critical assets, enhancing financial and economic autonomy.
