Sarawak’s TVET Boosts Tourism and Hospitality Growth

Must read

Sarawak is undergoing a significant economic transformation, driven by advancements in infrastructure, technology, and skill development, particularly in the tourism and hospitality sectors.

A key component of this progress is Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), which equips the workforce with industry-relevant skills to meet the growing demand in these industries.

In collaboration with private institutions and NGOs, the Sarawak government has implemented various initiatives to enhance TVET and promote sustainable economic growth.

Institutions such as CENTEXS and Sarawak Skills play a pivotal role in preparing professionals for careers in tourism and hospitality as Sarawak Skills boasts an impressive 89% employment rate for its graduates, demonstrating the effectiveness of its specialized training programs.

Likewise, UCSI University’s Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management has been recognized as the top TVET institution in Malaysia, reinforcing Sarawak’s position as a leader in vocational education for these industries.

Infrastructure development is also crucial in advancing TVET and economic expansion, particularly in tourism and hospitality.

The state government has invested heavily in modern training facilities, including simulated hotel environments, culinary arts centers, and digital infrastructure, ensuring students gain hands-on experience with industry-standard technologies as this is essential in the tourism and hospitality sectors, where customer experience and operational efficiency are key to success.

Other than that, collaborations between the government and private sector have resulted in specialized training programs tailored for tourism and hospitality.

For example, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture (MOTAC) is expanding TVET initiatives to ensure local talent is adequately trained to support Sarawak’s booming travel and hotel industry.

With continued investments in education, technology, and infrastructure, Sarawak is poised to become a regional hub for skilled tourism and hospitality professionals.

By prioritizing TVET, the state is addressing employment challenges while strengthening its competitive edge in the global hospitality and tourism markets.
