Sarawak Development Institute (SDI) will be organising a virtual public talk on mental health during COVID-19 and ways of coping while adapting to the new normal amidst the pandemic.
Titled ‘Mental Health during COVID-19 & Our Growth’, the talk will take place via ZOOM application on Friday, 27 November 2020 from 9.30am to 11.00am.
“Many intrapersonal and interpersonal struggles (resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic) have led to several psychological responses. Commonly seen conditions include anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and not to forget grief.
“While mental health is inevitably affected, there are also many positive changes in people that bring hope,” said SDI in a press statement.
Delivering this virtual public talk is Dr Bernard Ting, medical lecturer at the Department of Psychological Medicine, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), who will be sharing ways of addressing some of the issues faced by many during this unprecedented time, including coping with mental stress, depression, anxiety and loneliness.
Dr Ting is a visiting psychiatrist at Hospital Sentosa Kuching, and a member of the hospital’s Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Service (MHPSS), which provides psychological first aid to people that are affected by COVID-19.
He is also the secretary of the Befrienders Kuching and engages with multiple stakeholders such as schools, governmental and non-governmental agencies in undertaking projects to promote mental health awareness and fight against social stigma towards the mentally ill.
Additionally, he lends his expertise as a volunteer at Safe Space COVID-19 Malaysia, an online psychosocial support platform that aims to build community resilience for the hospital-bound individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic.
This virtual talk is open to members of the public. Those who wish to join may register at https://tinyurl.com/y2j8bfyw or scan the QR code below. ZOOM link will be emailed to participants upon registration.
