Better Facilities for Sarawak Police in 9MP

Must read

Construction
of three district police headquarters in Saratok, Roban and Tabuan Jaya
and two extensions of Sarawak police contingent complex and Kuching air
base unit are in the works as an effort of the federal government to
provide new and better facilities for the Sarawak police force. These five ‘built, lease and transfer’ (BLT) concept projects are to be implemented under the Ninth Malaysia Plan (9MP).

A total of nearly RM700 million has been allocated under the 2006 Budget to fund 31 BLT projects in the state. These
projects included the RM80 million Sarawak police continent complex,
various district police headquarters amounting to RM182.32 million, the
RM220 million General Operations Force camp, RM30 million air base unit
and various police stations amounting to RM177.9 million.

The recently completed Kota Samarahan police headquarters complex is
well equipped with an administrative block, police station, mosque,
multipurpose hall, residential apartments and housing, and recreational
and sports facilities. “The new complex will
provide a conducive environment for the police personnel who will in
turn provide excellent service to the public,” said YBhg Tan Sri Mohd
Bakri Omar, Inspector-General of Police.

Good crime control by the local police and cooperation from the general
public has kept the crime rates in Sarawak at a low level. Kota
Samarahan reportedly has the lowest crime rate in the state, and
Kanowit is considered as one of the most peaceful towns in the state. According
to Sarawak Police Commissioner, YBhg Datuk Talib Jamal, the goodwill
between the people and police has caused a drop in crime rates in
Kanowit Town, from 38 cases in 2004 to 18 cases in 2005, translating to
a 52.6% decrease in the number of crime committed.
