The State has so much to offer in terms of tourism attractions and events are earmarked to be one of the tourism products that are capable in bringing more arrivals into the State. The calendar offers a mixture of cultural, musical, ritual/religious and sports events.
Among the highlights events listed in the Calendar are Pesta Kaul, Miri International Jazz Festival, Irau Aco Festival, Pesta Babulang, Sarawak Regatta, Borneo International Kite Festival, Borneo Cultural Festival, Rainforest WorldMusic Festival and the Borneo International Yachting Challenge.
Datuk Ik Pahon Anak Joyik, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism and Heritage said, ‘Tourism Events are seen as a pull factor to attract visitors. Our strategy is to organise more events during low season as we need to provide buffer to the low arrivals.’ He added, ‘The new feature that we want to value add to our events next year is to organise tourist groups to visit the Governor and Chief Minister on their Raya Open House celebration. This will expose our culture to the tourists and hopefully they will inform their friends and relatives to come here during these festivals.’
In next year calendar, there will be more city events as there has been increased awareness on the importance of the events, not just for visiting guests but also for locals. It will create more spin-off benefits into the local economy and would eventually adds life and vibrant to the city.
The Calendar of Tourism Events 2010 is to be launched by YAB Chief Minister Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud in conjunction with the Transforming Sarawak Tourism Performance Conference 2010 at a hotel in Kuching.
