Congratulations to the winners of the Innowaste Community 2021 Competition!
Coming in first place was Lundu District Council for “Nirarur Upside Down 3R House”.
The project was in collaboration between the council and Niranur Agro Farm with the objective to instil and raise awareness on the concept of 3R (reduce, reuse and recycle) to the community.
The Niranur Upside Down 3R House was completed by the end of 2019.
With the concept of recycling, the project featured an inverted house where it made use of recycled items to build the house and for the decoration as well.
The Lundu District Council was also chosen as the winner for best video presentation award.
In second place of the competition was Kuching North City Hall or Dewan Bandaraya Kuching Utara (DBKU) for “Projek Perintis Wormingup Pengurusan Pembuangan Sisa Makanan”.
For the project, a variety of waste was collected for including food waste, leftover vegetables and seafood.
The project was in collaboration with Kuching-based non-governmental organisation (NGO), Worming Up.
In third place was Sibu Municipal Council for “Waste to Wealth” project.
The project was done in collaboration with SC Kiew Nang Community Garden Committee and Sibu Enoch Elderly Association.
For the project, a total of 29 residents were involved in building a Community Garden on a 2761-meter square land at Lorong 5C Kiew Nang, Sibu.
Apart from promoting gardening activity to the community, one of the objectives of the project is to promote 3R practices through the usage of second -hand goods for landscaping and also utilizing kitchen waste as organic fertilizers.
From the project, it was noted that the project has improve the residents’ quality of life by creating awareness on the importance of environmental conservation, improve social interaction among neighbours as well as cutting cost by growing their own vegetable crops.
Also winning the consolation prizes were Subis District Council for “Inovasi Tong Drum” in collaboration with Pusat Aktiviti Belia Sibuti and Sibu Rural District Council for “Pengumpulan Minyak Masak Terpakai” in collaboration with Hexapex Sdn. Bhd.
For the “Inovasi Tong Drum” project, the council in collaboration with Pusat Aktiviti Belia Sibuti build furniture from items such as used drum barrels, wood and also plywood.
For the “Pengumpulan Minyak Masak Terpakai” project, the council in collaboration with Hexapex collected used oil from food premises.
The oil that has been collected were packed in special collection barrels before being send to a collection centre in Bintangor and later to Kuching for processing.
In conjunction with the State Civil Service Innovation Month, the Ministry of Local Government and Housing, Sarawak (MLGH) has organised the Innowaste Program.
The competition was held as part of the Innowaste Program by MLGH.
In line with the COVID-19 situation and the requirements of the current PKP SOP, the Ministry took the approach of using the Webinar medium to channel information to all levels of the Sarawak community in accordance with the new norms of life.
Taking place on 5th October 2021, the program was organised during Innovation Month to increase community awareness on the importance of caring for the environment.
The program also aims to instil the value of awareness and responsibility towards the environment as well as introduce 3R programs with the concept of innovation and creativity.
The program also aims to improve solid waste management as the issue of Landfill Diversion Rate is at a high level.
