Riverine Transport Facilitates Economic Growth

Must read

Strong linkages between the maritime industry
and other industries could, in fact, result in the establishment of a
smooth and efficient water transportation system that will meet the
needs and demands of trade and commerce,
” said YB Datuk Douglas
Uggah, Minister of Transport. There is a growing need for port
authorities to enhance these working relationships such that the
riverine transportation system in Sarawak is well managed to facilitate
continuous economic growth of the state.

Sarawak is still very
much dependent on river transport to navigate the numerous tributaries
spread throughout the state. Surface water in the state covers an area
of 306 billion m2. Under the Eighth Malaysia Plan (8MP), RM20 million
has been allocated to improve existing riverine transport facilities
like wharves, landings and passenger terminals, particularly for areas
in Marudi, Bintulu, Kuching and Sebuyau. The main beneficiary from the
upgrading exercise is the maritime industry, as it would directly and
indirectly provides a spin-off effect in other industries, e.g.,
shipbuilding, dockyards, banking and insurance service providers.

In
2003, total activities at ports – cargo landed and discharged at
principal ports – amounted to 46,669 as compared to 39,314 in 1996, an
increase of 18.7% over the 8-year period. This figure is bound to
increase further with better facilities and services from the upgraded
riverine transportation system, with the government’s emphasis on
safety, security and efficiency. “It is imperative for local maritime
and shipping industries to improve the quality and standard of their
services in order to compete profitably with the other ports in the
region,” added YB Datuk Douglas Uggah.
