Crucial To Build An Ecosystem For Cybersecurity Expertise In Sarawak

Must read

The digital era with the rapid development of technology has become a catalyst for industrial revolution 4.0 which presents us with various opportunities for progress and profit.

This speed, opportunity for progress and profit will not last if it is not supported by an intact foundation and the goal of its implementation for the universal good.

Therefore, issues related to cyber security have been talked about and discussed seriously since the beginning of us stepping into the new millennium.

The Sarawak government since 2017 has taken steps to intensify the development of the digital economy and various initiatives have been implemented including Sarawak ID and S Pay Global and for that the Sarawak government believes that the level of cyber security not only in this state but in Malaysia needs to be increased from time to time.

For that, Sarawak is looking forward to implementing a digital identity platform through virtual cards, digital passes, and Certification Authority (CA) to address cybersecurity threats, said Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Open.

He said this in his opening speech at the Asia Pacific Cybersecurity Conference 2023 in May 2023.

He further added, the platform needs to be one of trust for the purpose of verifying the identity of an individual on the internet and in the cyber world.

According to him, the state’s identity networks and authentication methods are very fragmented, as every organization has its own ways to determine individuals’ credentials and authentication in their network.

“This disparity is causing a lot of friction and problems when people need to deal with multiple entities in both the public and private sectors. To transact in the digital economy, we require a Trust Economy –  we must be able to trust the authenticity of the parties we are dealing with digitally.”

“Therefore, in embracing the digital economy conveniently and securely, we must also put in place a framework of trust.”

Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari also stressed that it is crucial to build an ecosystem for cybersecurity expertise in Sarawak as cybersecurity is a vast domain requiring both deep technical expertise and generalist roles.

He pointed out that Sarawak needed more people in both the technical and generalist role.

Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari said cybersecurity threats are not local phenomena with the attacks could be launched from anywhere in the world and coming in anytime.

As such, he said the managed security services by skilled people, with proactive cybersecurity intelligence, and analysis would augment and significantly enhance the existing local security operations.

What is Cybersecurity & Importance of Cyber Security

Cybersecurity is the protection to defend internet-connected devices and services from malicious attacks by hackers, spammers, and cybercriminals. The practice is used by companies to protect against phishing schemes, ransomware attacks, identity theft, data breaches, and financial losses.

In today’s digital world, one cannot ignore cybersecurity. One single security breach can lead to exposing the personal information of millions of people. These breaches have a strong financial impact on the companies and loss of the trust of customers. Hence, cyber security is very essential to protect businesses and individuals from spammers and cyber criminals.
