Must read

SEDC continues to drive Sarawak’s socio-economic development

Since 1972, Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) has grown to become an important State agency that supports the State Government’s development objectives, particularly in promoting commercial, industrial and socio-economic growth.

That said, while it continues to be the leading agency in advancing Sarawak’s economic and social development, SEDC will need to play a greater role as the State heads towards the digital economy.

This was stated by Chief Minister YAB Datuk Amar Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg in his remarks during SEDC 45th Anniversary dinner, themed “Celebrating 45 Years of Service to the State and Rakyat.”

Meanwhile, SEDC’s new chairman YBhg Tan Sri Datuk Amar (Dr) Haji Abdul Aziz Dato Haji Husain (who took over from current Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office YB Datuk Haji Talib Zulpilip in March 2017) highlighted the agency’s performance in his welcoming remarks, where it has achieved profitability for ten years in a row, with total assets amounting to RM1.43 billion at group level and RM1.30 billion at corporation level in 2016.

Net assets also remained strong, with RM1.15 billion at group level and RM763 million at corporation level.

In terms of projects, SEDC has completed Borneo 744 (B744), Malaysia’s first entrepreneurship and creativity village in Bintawa, Kuching, which will help boost idea creation among youths and propel Sarawak at a global scale.

The agency has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Beijing Glory International Culture Development Co Ltd to enhance development of the State tourism industry.

In the future, SEDC is expected to be involved in major projects including the development of health tourism, urban transportation specifically the light rail transit (LRT) system, and oil and gas with the proposed methanol processing plant in Samalaju, Bintulu.
