Creating Awareness of Individuals with Special Needs

Themed ‘Access and Engagement’, the second International Conference on Special Education (ICSE 2017) focuses on increasing awareness to provide access and engagement of children with disabilities in education.

During the launch of ICSE 2017 on July 31st, Sarawak Chief Minister YAB Datuk Amar Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg said that the State has always been supportive of agendas and programmes related to the development of Persons with Disabilities (PWD).

“Here in Sarawak, I am happy to say that our personnel are actively involved in awareness programmes and activities to create awareness on the needs and rights of PWD in order to be able to live a normal life and be successful in their areas of interest,” said YAB Datuk Amar Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari.

According to Director of SEAMO Regional Centre for Special Education, Datin Dr Yasmin Hussain, since its inception in 2013, Southeast Asian Minister of Education organisation Special Education (SEAMO SEN) has been conducting regular, customised and in country trainings based on practices and themes of specific areas such as nutrition, sports, therapies, ICT and urban agriculture in Special Education.

“To increase heightened awareness, SEAMEO SEN conducts community based events to increase and acceptance of individuals with disabilities in the society and accommodating their needs in the community in terms of access, engagement and equity,” said Datin Dr. Hjh Yasmin Hussain.

Organised by SEAMEO SEN, the three days conference held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) presents an opportunity for its participants to exchange information and engage in dialogues to gain insights into the advancement and trends in Special Educations.
