More youths needed to occupy available spaces at TVET institutions

Must read

Although the current total capacity of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions is 21,825, only 15,573 trainees are occupying these spaces in 2017.

With 8,265 expected to graduate this year, there are still more spaces for Sarawakian youths to take up at these institutions.

“I would urge all the Yang Berhormat to help and to ensure that most of the youth are getting proper information regarding this TVET training,” said Assistant Minister of Education and Technological Research YB Dr Haji Annuar Rapaee.

This is in response to Demak Laut assemblyman YB Dr Haji Hazland Abang Hipni during the 3rd day of the 2nd Meeting of the 2nd Term of the 18th State Legislative Assembly on 10th November, 2017.

At present, there are 75 TVET institutions in Sarawak offering certificate and diploma programmes, of which 54 are public institutions while 21 are private.

These institutions are either set up by the State Government, such as Centre of Technical Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS) and Sarawak Skills Development Centre (PPKS), or the Federal Government, including vocational colleges, MARA Skills Institute (IKM), National Youth Skills Institute (IKBN), Industrial Training Institute (ILP) and Advanced Technology Training Centre (ADTEC).

Establishing TVET institutions are among measures the State Government is undertaking in institutionalising TVET as a means to develop highly capable workforce in Sarawak.

Other measures include the setting up of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Research, establishing Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Bumiputera Sarawak (TEGAS), strengthening engagement of TVET institutions and industries, providing places for on-the-job training and internship, expanding scope of Yayasan Sarawak’s financial assistance of TVET programmes, and ensuring local and international accreditation and recognition.
