Hygiene and Your Pet

Must read

Keep you and your pets healthy by practising good personal and pet hygiene

Pet owners can rest assured that their furry friends are less likely to spread COVID-19.

However, based on a few recent cases around the world, the only way pets can catch the disease is through exposure from their infected owners.

With that in mind, it is important to practise good hygiene among yourself and your pet to prevent the spread of germs and maintain a healthy co-existence not just during the COVID-19 pandemic, but also at any time in your life.

To begin with, wash your hands with soap and water after touching your pet, and especially upon handling its waste. Should you have a cat and you provide a litterbox for it, clean the box every day.

You should also clean its food and water dishes on a daily basis, store its food in airtight containers, and vacuum floors and furniture where it usually frequents on a regular basis.

If possible, keep your pet indoors. If it does end up roaming outside, wipe them before they enter your home, focusing first on their paws.

And if you are ill, restrict your contact with your pet or ask a healthy family member to look after it. It would also be good to disinfect any toys and spaces regularly occupied by your pet in your home.

In the event when your pet has fallen ill during the Movement Control Order (MCO) period, contact your veterinarian for further advice and precaution. Veterinary clinics remain open during this time as they are considered to be an essential service.
