art-341-01World Health Organization (WHO) recommended several precautionary steps for women with Covid-19 when breastfeeding their babies

Every year from 1st to 7th August, World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated to encourage breastfeeding and improve the health of babies around the world.

And in conjunction with World Breastfeeding Week, the World Health Organization (WHO) supports all women with babies to breastfeed even when Covid-19 is confirmed.

WHO recommended several precautionary hygiene measures for women with Covid-19 or suspected with Covid-19 when breastfeeding to protect the baby.

Before breastfeeding, they should wash their hands with soap and water or use alcohol-based hand rub frequently.

Besides that, women who breastfeed should also always sneeze or cough into a tissue and dispose it immediately.

They should also routinely clean and disinfect surfaces that you frequently touched.

Breastfeeding mothers should also wear a medical mask during any contact with the baby.

However, when mask is not available WHO still recommend breastfeeding as the benefits of breastfeeding outweigh the potential risk of transmitting the virus.

Among the benefits of breastfeeding for infants includes providing antibodies which helps protect against many common childhood illnesses as well as energy and nutrients for their first few months of life.
